3000 Emergency Calories

The Susitna 100 rules require that all racers carry "1-day of food (3000 calories) that may be consumed after the last checkpoint".

The logic is that you will only break into this calorie stash if things go bad and you are out there far longer than you anticipated. Last year I carried a 3600 calorie Datrex Emergency Food Bar but I honestly cannot imagine eating the thing.

What would you carry?

A) 18 oz plastic jar of peanut butter (178 cal/ounce) - 3200 calories
B) 7 King Sized Snickers bars (132 cal/ounce) - 3080 calories
C) 16 Reeces BIG Cups (144 Cal/ounce) - 3040 calories
D) Other: ____________________________________

Let's hear it.

Eric - just one giant brick? How do you know how many calories it is?

Damn I was going to go with butter too :) Hell I can eat butter pretty much straight up.

Add the calories separately, then mix.

I love those Datrex bars! We took a bunch on a 2 week kayak trip once and I never tired of them.

Fixie Dave - eating raw cookie dough is dangerous! Delicious, but dangerous. :)

Uuummmm, Cheesy Puffs! To equal 3000cals it would probably take a bag as big as your bed roll, then you can put it on the back of the bike to look like a more balanced rig.:>

I vote country crock-straight up with a warm spoon.

Jay - I would look sweet with a clear 14 gallon trash bag filled with Cheezy puffs strapped to the top of a rear rack.

I cracked open one of those survival bars recently. It was pasty, sort of no taste to it. It was basically just a bunch of fat glued together with some syrup. Had I been in a dire situation, it would have been great.

No no cookie dough is good for you, just leave out the raw eggs of course.
and yes - just one solid log. It does not freeze solid like bars do, you can still easily gnaw away at it even below zero. If you don't actually plan on eating the extra calories just bring olive oil.

Dave,

I assume two things. First, you will be able to melt snow for water and second weight is a big concern. With that said I would go with a concentrated powder source of calories.

The first thing that comes to mind is Perpetuem. It has 130 calories per scoop. I am not sure of the weight of each scoop so you would have to check.

The second cheaper option and I can verify weight, is instant Cream of wheat in the 100 calorie packets. Each packet weighs 1 oz so you would figure 30 oz of weight. I would remove the contents from the package and put it in a ziplock or similar container to further minimize the weight from the packets.

I compared the caloric density of pure brown sugar and they are nearly identical (Brown sugar 105cal/oz vs Instant Cream of Wheat 100/oz. With the CW packaging removed it would likely be even. I also know that CW would be far better fuel for endurance than brown sugar or butter or cookie dough.

Anyway, I hope this helps or sparks some thoughts.

Olive oil. It's simple science. 1g of carbohydrates nets you four calories. 1g of fat net you nine. So pure fat is the lightest way to go. (I have never in all of my digging heard of someone actually eating their emergency calories on the Su100.)

And the winner is....

The Datrex is making the trip again as my emergency calories. It is hard to beat the packability of the compressed package and dense calories. Butter and olive oil have the potential to make a mess in the frame bag. Ick.
